Ferries from Øksfjord ferjekai

Øksfjord is where the Finnmark road runs out and the boats take over. From this quay 43 active sailings reach Sørøya and the Loppa coast — and the crossing times tell you what kind of water it is: 10 minutes to the nearest, 100 to the furthest.

⚠ Three sailings across open Arctic water

The Bergsfjord run is an hour and forty minutes each way with three departures. That is a voyage, not a hop, and if it is cancelled there is no road alternative — Bergsfjord's road connects it to one other place.

Never plan a same-day onward connection off the long legs, and be sure of the return before you go.

Two quays, one village

Øksfjord has this car ferry quay and a separate express boat quay serving a wider set of Loppa destinations without vehicles. Both are "Øksfjord" on a ticket, and the destination lists barely overlap.

Turning up here towing a caravan for a passenger-boat destination is a wasted morning.

Where this is

Loppa municipality, western Finnmark, on the road between Alta and the Nordkapp turnoff. Øksfjordjøkelen above the village is Norway's ninth largest glacier and the only one on the mainland that calves directly into the sea; boats run to the calving front in Jøkelfjord in summer.

Sørøya

A large island west of here with a few small settlements and extraordinary sea fishing. Through the winter of 1944–45, after the German scorched-earth retreat burned Finnmark, several hundred civilians hid in caves on the island rather than be evacuated.
