Ferries from Hammerfest havn

A stone column above this town marks the northernmost survey point of the Struve Geodetic Arc — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Across the water sits an LNG plant processing gas from the Barents Sea. And from the quay below, 61 sailings reach ten destinations along a coast with very little road.

Almost all worked by Snelandia, the Finnmark county operator. Hammerfest is also a scheduled stop on the Hurtigruten and Havila coastal routes, at a different berth.

The coastal ships are the famous callers, but the working traffic here is Snelandia express boats serving Sørøya, Seiland and the Altafjord communities. Six of the ten destinations get two sailings or fewer.

Check the specific route and the specific day. A quay with ten listed destinations is not a quay with ten services.

Melkøya, across the water

The Hammerfest LNG plant on the island of Melkøya has been operational since 2007, processing gas from the Snøhvit field offshore. It was Europe's first LNG export facility.

It dominates the view from the town and is why Hammerfest has an economy that does not depend on visitors — which shows in the prices, the hotels and the fact that things stay open.

The Meridian Column

The Struve Geodetic Arc runs from the Black Sea to the Arctic Ocean, and its northern end is marked here. The nineteenth-century survey was among the first accurate measurements of a meridian arc and is inscribed by UNESCO across ten countries.

It is a short walk from the harbour and, for a monument to trigonometry, an unexpectedly good viewpoint.

Season

Polar night from late November to late January; midnight sun for over two months in summer. The express boats run through both, weather permitting — and this is open Arctic water.
