About the Tarifa – Tanger Ville crossing
The Tarifa to Tanger Ville ferry is the only fast crossing that lands you directly in the heart of Tangier, at the city-centre Tanger Ville port rather than the industrial Tanger Med terminal some 45 km east of the city. Sailing from Tarifa, the southernmost port on mainland Spain, it is the quickest and most convenient way to reach central Tangier from Europe, dropping passengers a short walk from the medina, the Kasbah and the Grand Socco.
A recent change of operator
For 25 years this line was run by FRS / DFDS, but that service ended on 5 May 2025. The route was taken over by Baleària, which began sailings on 20 May 2025 after winning a 15-year concession running to 2040. AML (Africa Morocco Link) also serves the crossing, so passengers now have a choice of carriers.
Vessels and frequency
Baleària operates the route with high-speed ferries including the Avemar Dos and the larger Jaume I, a fast craft with capacity for over 600 passengers and around 150 vehicles. Between the two operators there are frequent daily departures, with Baleària running up to around nine sailings a day and AML up to eight. Baleària has also announced plans to introduce two fully electric ships on the line, which would make it the first "Green Corridor" between Africa and Europe.
Crossing time and vehicles
The crossing is short, taking about one hour (roughly 54 minutes to 60 minutes). The ferries carry both foot passengers and vehicles, so you can drive on with a car or motorcycle.
Passport and border control
This is an international crossing from the EU into Morocco, so a valid passport is required and you must clear border control. Moroccan police typically stamp passports and process entry paperwork on board during the sailing, which speeds up disembarkation. Non-EU travellers should check whether they also need a visa for Morocco before travelling.
