About the Tanger VilleTarifa crossing

The Tanger Ville to Tarifa ferry is the quickest way to cross the Strait of Gibraltar between Morocco and Spain — and, uniquely among the Morocco–Spain fast links, it connects directly with Tangier's city-centre port (Tanger Ville) rather than the industrial Tanger Med port 40 km away. That makes it the favourite of independent travellers, since you step off the boat in the heart of Tangier's medina district.

This is a genuine fast-ferry crossing: sailing time is about one hour (roughly 60 minutes) over a maritime distance of only around 17–18 nautical miles, one of the shortest international sea crossings in Europe. The route runs a frequent daily schedule, with up to around a dozen departures a day in each direction; from the Spanish side the earliest sailings leave Tarifa around 08:00 and the last around 23:00, giving plenty of flexibility for a day trip or a longer stay.

Since 20 May 2025, Baleària took over the Tarifa–Tangier Ville route from FRS, operating fast ferries such as the Avemar Dos and Jaume I; Africa Morocco Link (AML) also serves the crossing, so schedules and capacity are shared across operators. Looking ahead, Baleària has begun building two 100% electric zero-emission fast ferries (at the Armón yard in Gijón) intended for this line from around 2027, which would make it a pioneering green corridor between Europe and Africa.

Tarifa is the only mainland Spanish port cleared for the Tanger Ville city crossing, and it is primarily a foot-passenger and fast-ferry route rather than a heavy vehicle corridor — for cars and freight most travellers use Tanger Med instead. As an international EU–Morocco crossing you need a valid passport, and Moroccan border/passport control is typically handled on board or at the terminal; it is wise to arrive at least 60 minutes before departure. Round-trip bookings usually save around 15%.
