About the Kirklandet SundbåtkaiMelkvikan Sundbåtkai crossing

34 sailings a day leaving Kirkelandet for Melkvikan, from 07.15 to 21.05 — the longest leg on the circuit at roughly nine minutes.

The newest stop on a 150-year-old service

Melkvikan is a recent addition on the Nordlandet shore, and it does not yet have a waiting shelter. What it has instead is an unusually generous open waiting area: bicycle racks, an amphitheatre and benches, laid out with deliberate reference to the harbour's building history. The shelter itself was still pending as of 2024.

⚠ Wheelchair access depends on which boat is running

The published timetable carries an explicit warning: when MS Framnæs is in service, a wheelchair cannot be used at Melkvikan. Framnæs is the 2012 replica that stands in as reserve boat, so this is not a rare situation — check which vessel is on the run before relying on this quay.

Operator

Sundbåten carries every passenger free of charge; the municipality covers the 1.5 million kroner of foregone fare revenue.

Vehicles, pets & onboard

  • Free of charge on every crossing
  • Guided harbour tours with a storyteller
  • MS Angvik available for meetings and lunches
  • Sundbåtsafari booklet on board
  • Gripruta service to Grip

Onboard facilities and vehicle, pet and luggage policies vary by operator and vessel; confirm details with the operator before booking.
