About the Gjendebu – Memurubu crossing
Lake Gjende sits 984 metres up in Jotunheimen, ringed by peaks above 2,000. There is no road along it. Gjendebåten works three quays — Gjendesheim, Memurubu and Gjendebu — and this leg covers 4.5 nautical miles between the two western ones in 20 to 30 minutes depending on the sailing.
Two departures a day, every day
The boats leave at 08:35 and 16:25. Both run all week within a season covering 5 August to 13 September 2026 — a window of under six weeks, which is what a lake at this altitude allows.
Why walkers use it
Besseggen is the most walked mountain route in Norway, and the usual way to do it is one-way: take the boat out and walk back. Most people cross from Gjendesheim to Memurubu and return over the ridge on foot, a walk of five to seven hours.
