About the DatcaSymi crossing

This crossing is not a scheduled ferry line. Mavi Transfer runs it as an organised trip on boutique boats taking 8 to 12 passengers, and you buy a package rather than a single ticket. The sea passage from Datça to Symi takes about an hour.

Departure days and times

Two day-trip departures, Monday and Thursday, meeting at Datça harbour at 09.30. Two overnight programmes leave at 10.00 — Tuesday for one night, Friday for two. Outside those days there is no crossing on this route.

What it costs

A day trip is €175 per person with everything included; the one-night package is €225 per person and the two-night €350. Sleeping ashore rather than aboard adds €50. Booking requests must be in at least five days ahead, and the deposit is only requested after approval.

The document rule that catches people out

There is no visa on arrival. Turkish travellers need a green passport or a valid Schengen visa; EU citizens need neither. An EU residence permit also works. The Turkish exit levy is the passenger's responsibility. If you are counting on buying a visa at the quay, as you can on some Turkey–Greece routes, this is not one of them.

Getting to Datça

Datça is at the end of the Reşadiye peninsula: roughly two hours by road from Dalaman airport, longer from Bodrum, on a slow and scenic road. The same company runs the airport transfers, so both halves are usually arranged together.

About Symi

Every morning in season, excursion boats leave Rhodes Town for Symi at half past eight and bring everyone back by seven. For those hours the harbour at Gialos is full. What almost nobody does is stay — and Gialos, a neoclassical amphitheatre of ochre and white houses stacked around the water, is a different place once the day boats have gone.
