About the Dalen bryggeLårdal brygge crossing

The boats working this stretch were built in 1882 and 1907, and they are still the scheduled service. M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen run the Telemark Canal between Skien and Dalen, and Dalen to Lårdal is one leg of that passage — not a preserved excursion running alongside a modern ferry, but the timetable itself.

Two departures, two different journeys

One sailing leaves at 08:00 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and takes 35 minutes. The other leaves at 08:50 every day and takes 30 minutes. The five-minute difference in duration is not rounding — the two services work the locks differently on the way through.

A waterway, not a fjord

The distance is about five nautical miles, but the canal is a built structure: a chain of lakes joined by locks, cut through inner Telemark in the nineteenth century to move timber. Progress is measured in lock cycles rather than knots, which is why a five-mile leg takes half an hour.

The season closes on 4 October

Canal sailings run from mid-May, daily through to early September, after which the service thins to six days a week and ends on 4 October 2026. Outside those dates there is no scheduled boat at all — the locks are not worked in winter.
