Wyk auf Föhr is both the island's only town and its ferry harbour, and the two are the same place — the berth is at the end of the promenade, a few minutes' walk from the shops. W.D.R. has been based here since 1885 and still keeps its head office on the quay.
Ferries run to Dagebüll in 50 minutes, eighteen times a day in summer with the first at 06:00 — 05:00 on Mondays — and the last at 20:00. A separate hourly-ish service crosses to Wittdün on Amrum in an hour, seven times a day at the height of the season.
Föhr is the green one of the two big islands: thatched villages, hedgerows and dairy fields inland, with fifteen kilometres of sand along the south coast. The island bus starts from the harbour and meets the boats. A single crossing to the mainland costs €10.30, a week's ticket €45.70 — the kind of fare that tells you most passengers are not tourists.
