Wittdün sits on the southern tip of Amrum, where the island narrows to a spit, and is the only harbour on it. Ferries from Dagebüll take 90 minutes if they come direct across the Norderaue and two hours if they call at Föhr first — most do, and the difference is worth checking before booking.
There are ten sailings a day in high summer and five in late autumn, plus an hourly-ish link to Wyk auf Föhr that takes an hour. The earliest boat off the island leaves at 05:30, a supply run that carries passengers almost incidentally.
Amrum is the wilder of the two islands: the Kniepsand, a sand flat that in places is broader than the island itself, dunes behind it, and the tallest lighthouse on the German North Sea coast. The island bus leaves from the harbour. An adult single to the mainland is €14.40, return €22.80, and a bicycle €13.00 return.
