Ferries from Split

Six million people passed through this port in 2024. That is more than any other passenger port in Croatia, and they all funnel through a working quay at Gat sv. Duje 1, a few minutes' walk from a Roman palace. The City Port here handles island ferries, catamarans, cruise ships and small craft in the same basin, which is why it feels less like a terminal and more like a harbour that acquired one.

The scale, and what it means on the ground

Split is not a large port by cargo standards, but for passengers it is Croatia's main gate and the volume is concentrated into a summer season and into daylight hours. The practical consequence is that congestion here is a queueing problem rather than a capacity problem: the berths exist, but everybody wants them between nine and six in July.

Ferries and cruise ships share the water

Most Mediterranean ports of this size separate the two. Split does not — the City Port takes ferry, catamaran, cruise and small-craft movements together, with the cruise berths on the same stretch of waterfront.

For a foot passenger that is mostly a good thing, because everything is walkable from the same promenade. For a driver in August it means the approach roads carry coach traffic on top of the vehicle queue for the island ferries.

Eight companies serve 27 destinations from Split. Our schedule data currently covers a subset — the main Jadrolinija, Kapetan Luka, TP Line and SNAV services — so the route list on this page is not the whole of what sails.

If a crossing you expect is missing, it is more likely a gap in our coverage than an absence in the port. Check the operator directly for the smaller and seasonal lines.

Where to stand, and when

Catamarans use the passenger piers with the operator signage; car ferries load from the larger berths further along the same quay. The bus and train stations are on the same waterfront, which is unusual for a port of this volume and is the reason Split works as an arrival city rather than merely a transit point.

When the port is at its limit

July and August, and within them the mid-morning and late-afternoon peaks when the island boats and the cruise calls overlap. Outside those months the same quay handles the same routes with none of the pressure, because the car ferries to Supetar, Stari Grad and Vela Luka run year round for the people who live on those islands.
