Ferries from Sand hurtigbåtkai

Three minutes. The hop from Sand to Ropeid is among the shortest scheduled crossings anywhere in Norway, and it is one of five routes from a quay handling 40 active sailings in the inner Ryfylke fjords.

These boats run on the same ticketing system as the buses in Stavanger. A regional travel card may already cover the crossing, and the fares are set as local transit rather than as ferry tickets.

Five routes, forty sailings

The distribution matters more than the total. Ropeid and Sauda carry most of it; Jelsa gets two departures. On the thin legs, check the day of the week as well as the time.

Sand

A village at the mouth of the Suldalslågen, one of Norway's classic salmon rivers — fished by British anglers from the nineteenth century, with the old Lindum lodge still standing. The Ryfylke museum is here.

The road inland follows the river to Suldalsvatnet and eventually over to Haukeli.

Where the network goes

Inner Ryfylke is a set of steep fjord arms with settlements on ledges above the water. Roads reach some, boats reach the rest, and Sand is where the two systems meet.
