Ferries from Oanes ferjekai

Thirty minutes from this quay is the car park for Preikestolen, and the road that leaves it also runs up the north side of one of Norway's most photographed fjords. Oanes is a small landing at the mouth of the Lysefjord that happens to sit at the front door of Ryfylke's main attraction.

Where you have landed

Oanes is in Strand municipality, on the eastern shore of the Høgsfjord where it meets the Lysefjord. The crossing from Lauvvik takes about 7 to 10 minutes, with 26 sailings each way run by Høgsfjord Ferry, year round.

From the pier, Rv13 and the county road take you toward Preikestolen Basecamp in roughly half an hour.

⚠ This is the southern approach, not the only one

Preikestolen can also be reached from Stavanger through the Ryfast tunnel and round the north side. Which is faster depends entirely on where you start: from Stavanger the tunnel usually wins, and from Sandnes or anywhere further south the ferry usually does.

Booking accommodation on the wrong side of that split is the standard mistake, because the two approaches converge only near the trailhead.

The fjord beyond

The Lysefjord runs about forty kilometres inland from here, walled by cliffs for most of its length, with Kjerag and the Flørli stairway further up and Lysebotn at the head. In summer a tourist car ferry works the fjord from Lauvvik, and sightseeing boats run from Stavanger and Lauvvik.

None of that leaves from Oanes itself. This quay does one thing: it lands the Høgsfjord crossing and puts you on the road.

Practicalities

No reservation, AutoPASS billing by number plate, free for foot passengers and cyclists. Facilities at the pier are minimal, and the last stretch of road to the trailhead has no fuel — fill up before you cross.

In summer the Preikestolen car park fills early in the day. The ferry is rarely the constraint here; the parking is.
