About

About Høgsfjordferja

Høgsfjordferja operates the Lauvvik–Oanes crossing over the Høgsfjord in Rogaland, south-west Norway — a 10-minute hop that saves a substantial detour and is the natural approach to the Lysefjord area and Preikestolen.

The crossing

Boats run about 26 times a day in each direction. There is no booking: you drive onto the quay and take the next departure. Two vessels work the route, MF Forsand and MF Svelviksund.

Wind, and why it matters here

This is an exposed stretch of water and strong wind is the main cause of cancellation — the operator's own notices record sailings suspended mid-day when it blows hard. Reliability has improved markedly since MF Forsand entered service: the operator now reports regularity above 99%, with wind cancellations down on previous years.

Still, if you are timing a connection on a stormy day, check the operator's traffic notices before setting off rather than assuming the timetable holds.

On board

MF Forsand has a small piece of Norwegian ferry history in her saloon: a collection of items from the period when she was among the country's most modern ferries, with rotating propellers that made her unusually manoeuvrable. It is a two-minute diversion on a ten-minute crossing, and worth it.
