About

About Høgsfjordferja

Høgsfjordferja crosses between Lauvvik and Oanes in ten minutes, and the operator describes it as the shortcut to Ryfylke and Preikestolen. On the way over you get a first look at the fjord landscape and, far up the Lysefjord, a glimpse of the Pulpit Rock itself.

Two ferries, and each has its own phone number

The crossing is worked by m/f Svelviksund and m/f Forsand, and the company publishes a direct telephone number for each vessel rather than a single switchboard. On a short fjord link where the question is usually “is the boat running right now”, being able to call the ship instead of an office is a meaningfully different level of access.

Wind is the thing that stops it

Read the operator’s own service notices and a pattern appears immediately: cancelled from 14:00 because of strong wind; closed for the rest of the day, heavy wind; cancelled 09:00 to 13:00. This is a ten-minute crossing, but it is an exposed one, and weather — not demand, not maintenance — is what removes departures from this timetable.

The new ferry pushed reliability past 99%

MF Forsand entered service in January and the company reports the effect plainly: the number of departures cancelled because of wind fell further, and regularity on the link is now over 99%. Very few operators publish a reliability figure at all, and fewer still tie it to a specific vessel arriving.

There is a small museum in the saloon

MF Forsand has rotatable propellers and was, in its day, one of the most modern ferries in Norway. The company has gathered antiques from that period in the saloon and suggests first-time passengers go down and look. It is a ten-minute crossing with an exhibition on board, which is an unusual ratio.

When a closed tunnel adds sailings

In February 2025 the operator published an extended timetable because the Høllesli tunnel was shut. That is the reverse of the usual story on this site, where a new tunnel or bridge takes traffic away from a ferry: here a road closure sent traffic back to the water and the ferry put on more departures to absorb it.

What the timetable holds

Our data carries 26 departures in each direction, ten minutes a crossing. Sailings from Oanes run 06:00 to 18:30 and from Lauvvik 06:15 to 18:45. Most run every day; a further group runs Monday to Friday only, which is the commuter layer on top of the base service.
