About
About Bodø ferjekai
Train, plane, coastal express and car ferry all meet within a few hundred metres here, and that is not an accident of geography. Bodø was flattened in 1940 and rebuilt from nothing, which gave the planners something almost no European town gets: a blank sheet and a reason to put the transport in one place.
Everything in one block
The ferry terminal sits next to the railway station, a short walk from the town centre, and the Hurtigruten coastal ships share the same terminal building as the Lofoten car ferry. The airport is a few minutes away.
For a traveller heading to Lofoten this is the practical point of Bodø: you can arrive by night train from Trondheim and be on a boat without a taxi in between.
Why the town looks like that
On 27 May 1940 German aircraft bombed Bodø and almost the entire town centre and harbour burned, along with much of the housing. What stands now is a post-war rebuild in a plain modernist idiom — which is why a town in the Arctic with a thousand years of history looks like it was designed in 1955.
Three ferry routes, and two of them go nowhere else
- Moskenes in Lofoten — 34 sailings in our timetable, about 3 h 15 m across the Vestfjorden. The busy one.
- Værøy — 6 to 9 sailings, roughly 3 hours.
- Røst — 9 sailings, about 3 h 30 m.
Værøy and Røst are the outer Lofoten islands, with no road connection to anywhere. For them Bodø is not a convenient gateway, it is the only one — and that is worth knowing before treating either as a casual detour.
⚠ The Moskenes crossing is the one to book
Vehicle space on the Lofoten ferry sells out weeks ahead in summer, and a missed slot can cost a day. The Lofoten guide covers the booking mechanics; the short version is that this is the reservation to make before anything else in a Lofoten trip.
What else is here
Saltstraumen, one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, runs a short bus ride from town — buses 200 and 300 — and reaches full strength roughly four times a day, about every six hours. If a ferry connection leaves you half a day in Bodø, that is what to do with it.
