Ferries from Værøy ferjekai

Between this island and Moskenes lies the Moskstraumen — a system of tidal eddies and whirlpools, among the strongest maelstroms in the world. The ferry to Lofoten crosses it. That is not a tourist-brochure detail; it is why this route behaves differently from every other county ferry in Norway.

Three routes off the island

• Moskenes in Lofoten — about 75 minutes, 9 sailings.
• Røst, the outer island — about 90 minutes, 8 sailings.
• Bodø on the mainland — about 3 hours, 8 sailings.

All three run as one service, worked by the vessels covering the Bodø–Værøy–Røst–Moskenes chain. A single boat may call at several of these quays on one rotation.

⚠ Weather cancels this route more than most

Værøy sits in open sea beyond the end of the Lofoten wall, and the crossing is genuinely exposed. Sailings are cancelled in conditions that would not trouble a sheltered fjord ferry.

If you are travelling out to Værøy or Røst, do not plan a same-day connection to a flight or a train. Build a spare day into the itinerary, especially between October and March.

The maelstrom

Moskstraumen forms where tidal water moves between the Norwegian Sea and the Vestfjord past the tip of the archipelago. It reached European literature through Poe and Verne, both of whom exaggerated it considerably; the reality is a broad field of strong, shifting current rather than a hole in the sea.

From the ferry deck in the right conditions you can see the surface texture change. In the wrong ones you mostly notice the motion.

Practicalities

Vehicle space on these outer sailings is limited and reservation practice differs from the mainland's turn-up-and-go quays. Check before assuming you can drive on.

The island has a small population, limited accommodation and an airstrip that no longer takes scheduled fixed-wing flights — the boat is effectively the way in.
