About the Værøy ferjekai – Moskenes ferjekai crossing
This crossing passes one of the strongest tidal currents on earth. The Moskenstraumen runs off the north side of the island of Mosken, between Værøy and the Lofoten wall, and the ferry route threads that water on its way to Moskenes. The passage is 75 minutes over nearly 17 nautical miles.
Nine sailings across six different day patterns
There is no such thing as a typical day here. One departure runs on Tuesdays, another on Wednesdays, a third on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Two run on Fridays — at 00:30 and 22:00 — one runs Monday to Friday at 22:45, and three run on Sundays, from 13:30 to 23:15. Nine departures, and barely two of them share a calendar.
Book, and arrive early
Up to 60% of the capacity on each departure can be reserved in advance, and reservations close 10 hours before sailing. If you hold one, you are expected at the quay 45 minutes ahead — late arrival releases the space. On a route with one boat a day and sometimes none, that rule has teeth.
Part of a longer chain
Værøy is a call on the Bodø–Værøy–Røst–Moskenes service rather than the end of a shuttle, which is why the day patterns look arbitrary: they are the residue of a longer rotation. The current plan runs to 31 January 2027.

About Lofoten Islands
Lofoten's road is fine. The ferry is the problem. Almost everyone driving to the islands crosses the Vestfjorden from Bodø to Moskenes, and in summer those car spaces disappear from the booking system weeks ahead — while the alternative, the long road in from the north, adds most of a day. Sorting the ferry first is not a detail of the trip; on this archipelago it is the trip.
