About the Røst ferjekaiBodø ferjekai crossing

Fifty-five nautical miles, and 210 minutes at sea. This is the longest car ferry crossing in our Norwegian data: Røst, the outermost inhabited island of the Lofoten chain, to Bodø on the mainland. There is no shorter way off the island by boat, and no road at all.

Eight sailings, seven calendars

No two departures share a full day pattern. There is one on Mondays at 21:00, two on Wednesdays at 09:45 and 22:30, one on Thursdays, one on Fridays, one on Sundays at 20:00, and two more spread across Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday groups. Reading this timetable by hour is useless.

Three times the distance of the next island

Fifty-five nautical miles puts this in a different category from the rest of the network it belongs to. The neighbouring Værøy crossing covers under seventeen; Røst is more than three times further out, and the extra two and a half hours are the price of that position at the end of the chain.

What a 210-minute timetable means

At three and a half hours each way, a same-day return is only possible on the two days that carry a morning and an evening sailing. Every other day forces an overnight at one end or the other, which is why the departure you can take matters far more here than the one you would prefer. The plan runs to 31 January 2027.

What's the luggage allowance?

Foot passengers can normally bring their own luggage aboard at no extra charge, with racks or a luggage area near the entrance, and there is usually no airline-style weight limit. Oversized or excess items may carry a fee, so check with the operator if you are travelling with bulky baggage.
