Kumejima Ocean Jet put its first boat in the water in 2026, and the proposition is simple: Naha to the island of Kumejima in 92 minutes. The conventional car ferry on the same run takes three to four hours. The company's vessel is Tsumugi, a hydrofoil that lifts its hull clear of the water at speed — which is what makes the crossing quick, and also what keeps it steady in the swell off Okinawa's west coast.

Two lines, and a very small timetable

The Kumejima line is the main service. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays there are two round trips — 08:00 and 13:10 out of Naha, returning 10:10 and 16:00. On Tuesdays and Thursdays it drops to one: out at 08:00, back at 16:00, which makes a day trip possible but long. On Saturdays the boat does something different: it runs north to Motobu in the morning — 08:30, back at 10:10, a 65-minute hop — and only then turns to Kumejima at 13:10.

Where the boats leave from

Naha departures use the Naha Wharf passenger terminal (那覇ふ頭), not the Tomari port that most Okinawan island ferries use — an easy mistake and the company flags it on its own front page. Cars cannot be driven onto the quay; there are paid car parks nearby. On Kumejima the boat berths at Kanegusuku (兼城港), and at Motobu it is Toguchi (渡久地港).

Check-in, and what it costs

Be at the port 30 minutes before departure and complete check-in 15 minutes before; the company states plainly that passengers who miss that window may not board. Fares are published as a rules document rather than a price list, and the figures it names are the discounted ones: an Ocean Jet Club member pays ¥5,000 one way on either line (membership is ¥15,000 a year), a child is ¥5,800 to Kumejima and ¥5,000 to Motobu, and disabled passengers with a carer pay ¥1,000. There are further reductions for Okinawa island residents, over-70s, school groups and families.
