Jotunheimen og Valdresruten Bilselskap (JVB) is a transport company in the Valdres region of Norway, founded in 1919. Alongside its buses, it runs one of the country's most storied mountain-lake boats — the historic M/B Bitihorn on Lake Bygdin, high in the Jotunheimen mountains.
The Bitihorn on Lake Bygdin
Each summer the Bitihorn sails the length of Lake Bygdin, at over 1,050 metres in Norway's highest mountains, linking Bygdin with the DNT lodge at Torfinnsbu and the trailheads at Eidsbugarden. For hikers on the Jotunheimen trail network it is both transport and an experience, carrying around 10,000 passengers a season.
A working antique
The boat was built in 1912, hauled up to the lake in pieces and reassembled on its shore; JVB has run it since 1944, and it carried the mail on Bygdin until 2019. The season runs roughly late June to mid-September, subject to the reservoir's water level. Fares are in Norwegian kroner.
