Corsica Ferries — Corsica & Sardinia Ferries in full, and the yellow hulls to everyone who has queued at Toulon — was founded in 1968 by Pascal Lota, a Bastia man who put a single ship called Corsica Express on the run between Corsica and Italy. For its first thirteen years the company was essentially an Italian operation. The French mainland routes came later, and the acquisition of the Italian line TTE brought Sardinia into the network under the Sardinia Ferries name.

Where the ships go

The network divides into three. To Corsica: Nice and Toulon on the French side, Sète further west, plus Livorno and Savona in Italy, serving Bastia, Ajaccio, Île-Rousse, Porto-Vecchio and Propriano. To Sardinia: Livorno to Golfo Aranci year-round, and Toulon, Nice and Sète to Porto Torres. To the Balearics, a recent addition: Toulon and Sète to Alcúdia on Majorca. The company counts up to thirty crossings in total.

Toulon, and why it matters

Toulon is the operator's structural advantage over the Marseille-based competition. It sits 35 minutes closer to Corsica by road than Marseille and cuts nearly three hours off the sea passage, which is why the overnight Toulon sailings dominate the French side of the timetable. Bastia is roughly eleven hours from Toulon overnight, Ajaccio ten, and the southern ports — Porto-Vecchio, Propriano — fifteen or sixteen.

The Mega Express fleet

The 2001 introduction of the Mega Express class is what opened Toulon to Ajaccio, Calvi, Île-Rousse and Bastia. Mega Express Three followed in 2004 as the flagship on the Sardinian run, Four in 2006, Five in 2007. Mega Smeralda arrived in 2008 and her sister Mega Andrea in 2015; the Pascal Lota, named for the founder, in 2017; Mega Regina in 2021 and Mega Victoria in 2023. By 2004 Corsica Ferries was carrying more passengers to Corsica than any other line — about two-thirds of its traffic goes to Corsica and a third to Sardinia.

Booking

Fares are dynamic and quoted only through the reservation engine, so there is no published price list to compare against — the same crossing can differ substantially between a February midweek and an August Saturday. Cabins, reclining seats and deck passage are all sold; cars, motorbikes, campers and dogs are carried. Most of the network is seasonal, with the timetable thickening from May and thinning sharply after September.
