About

About Boston Harbor Islands Ferry

Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park takes in 34 islands and peninsulas within sight of downtown Boston, and the ferries are how nearly all of it is reached.

The islands with a boat

Scheduled service runs to Georges Island — home of Fort Warren — and Spectacle Island, with inter-island shuttles onward to Peddocks, Lovells, Grape and Bumpkin. Little Brewster, site of Boston Light, is reached on a separate lighthouse cruise.

Mainland parts need no ferry

Worth knowing before you buy a ticket: World's End, Webb Memorial, Nut Island and Deer Island are part of the same park but reachable by road. If your plan is a walk with harbour views rather than an island landing, you do not need a boat at all.

Staying over

Camping is permitted on several islands, which changes the ferry planning entirely — the last boat back is the constraint, and campers work to a different schedule from day visitors.

Access

The park publishes free and discounted access arrangements alongside standard ferry tickets, plus separate guidance for groups, families and event hire. It is run as a partnership between federal, state and city bodies rather than by a single agency.

Hingham is the hub, not Boston

The frequency tells you where the network actually centres. Hingham to Georges Island and its return carry six departures each, and Hingham to Peddocks five — while Georges Island to Long Wharf, the link to downtown Boston, carries only four.

Crossings run 20 to 45 minutes and the whole operation sits inside a single daytime window, roughly 09:00 to 17:15. There is no early boat and no evening boat: the service exists to put visitors on the islands for a day and bring them back, and the day patterns differ between the Georges Island runs and the Peddocks ones, so the two are not interchangeable.
