Ferries from Spectacle Island (SI)

The last boat back is at 17:30 but the last boat out is at 14:30. Three sailings a day come from Long Wharf — 10:30, 12:30, 14:30 — and four go back, at 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:30, which is the timetable steadily emptying the island through the afternoon.

Each crossing is 3.6 nautical miles and 30 minutes, running every day of the week under the Boston Harbor Islands ferry.

Spectacle spent most of the twentieth century as the city's rubbish dump, and the hills a visitor walks up now are that landfill capped and sealed with several million cubic metres of clay and earth excavated during Boston's Big Dig in the 1990s. The result is one of the highest points in the harbour islands and a view back at the skyline that came, quite literally, out from under it.
