About the Victoria (arrive 20 min ahead for customs clearance)Port Angeles (arrive 20 min ahead for customs clearance) crossing

Five daily departures from Victoria's Inner Harbour to Port Angeles, at 06:10, 10:30, 15:00, 16:00 and 19:30 — a 90-minute crossing of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The early boat has no equivalent going the other way

Southbound service starts at 06:10, more than two hours before the first northbound sailing. It is the departure that makes a same-day return from Vancouver Island to the Olympic Peninsula workable, and it is used accordingly — by commuters, by freight, and by anyone connecting onward to Seattle.

Duty free, once you are underway

Crossing into the United States means the Coho's duty-free shop is open on this leg — spirits and cigarettes, with allowances set by U.S. rules. It opens about halfway across and the Purser announces it; if you board expecting to shop immediately, you will wait. There is also a cafeteria, a gift shop, a solarium and pet-friendly areas.

Entering the U.S.

The same Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative documents apply in this direction: passport, Passport Card, NEXUS, or an Enhanced Driver's Licence from an approved province or state. REAL IDs do not qualify. Reserved vehicles check in 60 minutes ahead, foot passengers 30.

Practical

Fares are quoted in US dollars — adult $25, car and driver $88 — but Black Ball accepts Canadian funds at exchange, and cards processed in Canada can be billed in either currency.
