About the ŠibenikZlarin crossing

Zlarin is the nearest of the inhabited Šibenik islands and one of the most rewarding to visit, sitting just outside the mouth of the Krka estuary. Jadrolinija's Šibenik–Zlarin–Prvić–Vodice passenger boat is the standard way to reach it, sailing out of Šibenik's town quay and across to Zlarin harbour in roughly 25 to 40 minutes depending on the vessel and how many stops it makes. It is a passenger-only service — appropriate, because Zlarin famously bans cars.

The car-free coral island

Zlarin is the third-largest island in the Šibenik archipelago, at about 8 km², yet fewer than 300 people live there year-round. Its name comes from the Croatian word for gold, zlato, and it is often called the "golden island," but its real fame is red coral. For centuries islanders dived for and worked coral, and the tradition is preserved today at the island's coral centre, where you can see the harvesting and jewellery-making heritage explained. The island markets itself as both car-free and largely plastic-free.

What to expect on arrival

Stepping off the boat you find a single, gentle harbour village of stone houses, a handful of konobas and cafés, pebble coves within walking distance and pine-shaded paths inland. There are no vehicles to dodge, which makes it a calm, walkable escape only a short sail from the city.

  • Operator: Jadrolinija, passenger-only boat
  • Crossing time: about 25–40 minutes from Šibenik
  • Island character: car-free, coral heritage, quiet coves
  • First stop: Zlarin is the first island call on the Šibenik–Vodice line

Sailings are frequent in summer, with up to several a day, and reduced in the colder months. A separate Jadrolinija car ferry to Kaprije and Žirje also calls at Zlarin, but for a straightforward city-to-island trip the passenger boat is the usual choice.
