About the San Sebastián de La GomeraLos Cristianos crossing

The ferry from San Sebastián de La Gomera to Los Cristianos (Tenerife) is the main sea link between the small island of La Gomera and its larger neighbour, and for most Gomeros it is the everyday lifeline to Tenerife's hospitals, airport connections and the wider Canaries. The route crosses the channel south of Tenerife's Teide massif, with the peak often visible astern as you leave port.

Operators and vessels

Two companies run the crossing. Fred. Olsen Express deploys its flagship Benchijigua Express, a 126-metre Austal-built trimaran that was the first vehicle-carrying trimaran ferry in the world when it entered service in 2005 and cruises at up to around 36 knots. Naviera Armas operates the route in parallel with fast ferries such as the Volcán class. Both carry foot passengers and vehicles, and the two lines share the terminal at Los Cristianos, using adjacent ramps.

Crossing time and schedule

The passage takes roughly 50 minutes with Naviera Armas and about an hour on Fred. Olsen sailings. Between them there are around 32 crossings a week, with each operator offering up to three departures a day. The first boats leave in the early morning, around 07:00, and the last evening sailings run until roughly 20:30, giving enough range for a comfortable day trip in either direction.

Ports and practical tips

San Sebastián's harbour sits right below the island capital, a short walk from its plaza, the Torre del Conde and the streets Columbus is said to have walked before sailing west. Los Cristianos is a busy resort port in southern Tenerife, well placed for Tenerife South airport and the motorway network. Foot passengers should be ready for boarding at least 20 minutes before departure, and drivers at least 40 minutes ahead. Booking in advance is wise in summer and at weekends, and Canary Islands residents can claim substantial fare discounts with proof of residency.
