About the Molat – Ist crossing
Getting from Molat to Ist means catching one of Jadrolinija's Zadar-based island lines as it works its way out toward the far edge of the Zadar archipelago. Both islands sit on the same run, so Molat is an intermediate call and Ist is near the end of the line.
The fast catamaran
The main link is Jadrolinija's catamaran line 9403, which sails Zadar – Molat – Brgulje – Zapuntel – Ist. Molat itself has three landing places on this route: the port of Molat, plus Brgulje and Zapuntel. From whichever of these you board, the catamaran carries you onward to Ist, tying up in the Široka bay on the island's southern side. The whole Zadar-to-Ist run takes about 1 hour 50 minutes, so the Molat–Ist portion is only a fraction of that. This is a foot-passenger catamaran; it does not carry cars.
The car ferry alternative
If you are moving a vehicle, Jadrolinija's car ferry line 433 (Zadar Gaženica – Rivanj – Sestrunj – Zverinac – Molat – Kosirača on Ist) also connects the two islands, calling at Molat before reaching the Kosirača ramp on Ist. It is slower but takes cars.
Arriving on Ist
- Ist is a small, sparsely populated island of only about 9 km², home to roughly 250 people.
- It has a distinctive butterfly shape, pinched between two deep bays: Široka in the south and Kosirača in the northwest.
- It is a quiet, low-key destination well suited to travellers seeking peace close to nature rather than nightlife or crowds.
Sailings are more frequent in summer than in the low season, so confirm the timetable and whether you want the catamaran (Široka) or the car ferry (Kosirača).
