Melilla to Málaga Ferry

The Melilla to Málaga ferry links the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla, on the North African coast, with the Andalusian port of Málaga. Legally this is a domestic Spanish crossing between Spanish territory and the mainland, so it is not an entry into Morocco. In practice, however, Melilla sits outside the Schengen Area, so identity and border checks are still carried out before boarding. Spanish nationals travel on their DNI, EU/EEA citizens on a national ID card, and non-EU passengers should carry a passport.

Crossing time and overnight sailings

The voyage across the Alborán Sea takes around 6 to 7 hours, with most sailings completing in roughly 6 hours 20 minutes. It is frequently run as an overnight service: the standard pattern has the ship leaving in the afternoon or at night and arriving early, so passengers can sleep across the crossing. Because of the length, the ferry offers private cabins, shared cabins and airline-style reclining seats.

Operator and frequency

The line is operated by Baleària (the Trasmediterránea brand having been absorbed into Baleària). It runs roughly daily, about seven sailings a week, with departures from Málaga typically in the mid-afternoon on weekdays and additional Saturday sailings, including a morning and an overnight option, added in the June-to-September high season.

Vehicles and travellers

The route carries cars, motorhomes and freight alongside foot passengers, serving both Melilla residents and the heavy summer diaspora movement, since many travellers use Melilla as a stepping stone toward nearby Nador in Morocco, about 15 km away. As a well-used lifeline connection it is one of the most reliable links to the enclave, but summer demand is high, so book cabins ahead and reconfirm the timetable directly with the operator.
