About the Matane – Baie-Comeau crossing
This is the crossing that saves a day of driving. The St. Lawrence is wide enough here that going around it — up through Rimouski, west to Québec City and back down the north shore — is a detour of roughly 800 kilometres. Instead you board at Matane in the Gaspésie and step off about two and a half hours later at Baie-Comeau on the Côte-Nord. Service runs year-round, and because it functions as a road link rather than a scenic ride, the vessel carries cars, motorhomes and freight trucks. Sailings are few — a handful a day, and fewer in winter — which makes this one of the routes where a reservation is genuinely worth having rather than a formality. From Matane you can also sail to Godbout, further east along the same north shore; which port you get depends on the departure, not on choice at the dock.
