About the Kyrenia – Tasucu crossing
The Kyrenia to Taşucu ferry is the main maritime link between Northern Cyprus and mainland Turkey, connecting the harbour city of Girne (Kyrenia) on the north coast of Cyprus with the small Turkish port of Taşucu near Silifke on the Mediterranean coast. It is the busiest and most popular sea route to and from Northern Cyprus, used by tourists, residents, students and drivers alike.
Operator and two vessel types
The route is operated by Akgünler Denizcilik, which runs two distinct services. A fast catamaran "sea bus" (Express) carries foot passengers only and covers the crossing in about 2 to 3 hours, ideal for travellers without a car. Alongside it, a larger conventional RoRo car ferry carries vehicles as well as passengers and takes around 5 to 6 hours, often sailing overnight.
Frequency and timing
Services run year-round, roughly four days a week in the low season and daily in summer. Fast catamaran departures are usually daytime, while the car ferry frequently sails at night so drivers arrive in the morning. Passengers are generally asked to be at the port at least two hours before departure.
Ports and border notes
Taşucu connects by road to Silifke, Mersin and the wider Turkish network, while Girne is Northern Cyprus's principal tourist harbour. Because Northern Cyprus (the TRNC) is recognised only by Turkey and is regarded internationally as part of the Republic of Cyprus, all legal sea access to the north is via Turkey. A valid passport is required, and travellers should note that the Republic of Cyprus treats arrival through northern ports as entry via an unauthorised point of entry.
