About the IbizaFormentera crossing

Formentera has no airport, and its only entry and exit point is the port of La Savina. That makes the ferry from Ibiza the sole way to reach the island, and it is one of the most frequent short crossings in the Mediterranean. The route runs across Es Freus, the narrow channel of roughly 6 km separating the two islands, from the port of Ibiza (Eivissa) to La Savina.

Operators and crossing times

Competition on the route keeps it fast and frequent:

  • Baleària and Trasmapi fast ferries cross in about 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Formentera Lines takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Aquabus is the slower, budget-friendly choice at roughly 45 minutes.

How often it runs

Sailings operate daily throughout the year. In high season, from June to September, the combined operators run up to around 47 departures a day, roughly every 30 to 60 minutes from early morning until late evening, so day trips are easy to plan. Frequency drops in winter and the last boat back leaves earlier, which matters if you are visiting for the day.

Vehicles and permits

Because Formentera is small and largely explored by scooter or bicycle, most visitors cross as foot passengers and rent transport on arrival. If you do want to bring a car, note the island's seasonal restriction: from 1 June to 30 September non-resident vehicles must apply for a permit through the Formentera Eco scheme and pay a daily fee (around €6 per day for cars, with a minimum charge, and less for motorbikes). Caravans and motorhomes are not permitted during that window. Outside those dates you can bring a vehicle without a permit.

In peak summer, reserve return sailings in advance, as the late-afternoon boats back to Ibiza fill quickly with day-trippers.
