Famagusta to Mersin Ferry

The Famagusta to Mersin ferry connects Gazimağusa (Famagusta) on the east coast of Northern Cyprus with the major Turkish port of Mersin on the south coast of Turkey. It is the principal cargo-and-passenger sea link on the eastern side of the island and a lifeline route for freight, commercial vehicles and travellers moving between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and mainland Turkey.

Operator and vessel

The line is run by Akgünler Denizcilik, the main ferry company serving Northern Cyprus, using a conventional RoRo car-and-passenger ferry. The service carries cars, trucks and freight alongside foot passengers, with basic cabins and cafeteria facilities on board for the overnight journey.

Crossing time and frequency

This is an overnight crossing of roughly 9 to 12 hours, with vessels typically departing in the evening and arriving the following morning. The service runs around three times a week, all year round, though exact departure days and times shift seasonally, so it is to confirm the current timetable before travelling.

Ports and border notes

Mersin is a large, well-connected Turkish port with onward road and rail links across southern Turkey, while Famagusta is Northern Cyprus's main eastern harbour. Because Northern Cyprus (the TRNC) is recognised only by Turkey and is considered by the wider international community to be part of the Republic of Cyprus, all legal sea and air access is via Turkey. A valid passport is required; entering the island through this port is treated by the Republic of Cyprus as entry through an unauthorised point, which can have implications for onward travel into the government-controlled south.
