The ferry route connecting Chios, a beautiful Greek island in the North Aegean, with Cesme, a popular Turkish resort town, is one of the busiest cross-border sea links between Greece and Turkey. For the 2026 season, three operators provide services on this return route: Erturk Lines, offering year-round crossings with classic car ferries; Sun Lines, operating fast catamarans from May to September; and IDO Sun Express, which commenced services on May 15, 2026. This route is strategically important, especially during summer, facilitating tourism for both Turkish and Greek citizens, providing an alternative for European travelers entering Turkey by road, and enabling island visitors to extend their holidays into Turkey. All three operators depart from Chios Port, but their arrival points in Cesme differ. Erturk Lines and Sun Lines arrive at Cesme Pier (the town center), while IDO Sun Express arrives at Cesme Ulusoy Port, approximately 3 km north of the town center. Passengers should confirm their arrival port when booking to plan onward transfers. As this is an international crossing, all travelers must carry a valid passport. Visa requirements for Turkey or the Schengen Area (Greece) apply based on nationality. Customs checks are mandatory upon arrival in both countries. For those traveling with a vehicle, only Erturk Lines accepts cars, and specific documentation, including international insurance (Green Card) and vehicle registration, is required. The registered owner must be present or a notarized power of attorney provided. The Chios-Cesme crossing is a convenient and scenic way to travel between these two vibrant destinations.
