The Cesme to Chios ferry route is a international crossing in the Aegean Sea, connecting Turkey and Greece. Despite a geographical distance of only 6 nautical miles, the 12-kilometer sea journey between the ports is utilized by thousands of travelers for both commercial and tourism purposes. In 2026, three different operators serve this popular route: Erturk Lines, offering year-round service since 1965 with classic car ferries; Sun Lines, providing fast catamaran crossings during the summer months; and IDO Sun Express, which commenced services on May 15, 2026. Each operator offers distinct departure points, vessel types, and pricing policies, allowing travelers to choose an option that best suits their needs. Erturk Lines, with 60 years of experience, operates classic car ferries (Cesme Express and other vessels in its fleet) year-round, accommodating both passengers and vehicles. Their standard journeys take approximately 45 minutes, though this can extend to 90 minutes in heavy seas or with a full load. These ferries offer open-air deck travel and scenic Aegean views. Sun Lines, operating modern fast catamarans like "Sun Trip" and "Sun Star" from May to September, reduces the crossing time to just 30 minutes. These passenger-only catamarans provide a quick journey in enclosed, air-conditioned lounges. IDO Sun Express, new for the 2026 season, uses modern sea buses. Its journey takes about 60 minutes due to its departure from Cesme Ulusoy Port, located approximately 3 km north of the central pier, resulting in a longer northern route to Chios Port. Ferry schedules vary by season. During the summer (April 1 – October 31), all three operators combine to offer a total of six daily departures from Cesme. In the winter season (November 1 – March 31), only Erturk Lines operates, with a single daily departure at 10:00 from Cesme Pier. Sun Lines and IDO services are suspended during winter. All operators may add extra sailings (usually midday) on public holidays, festivals, and weekends. Travelers should arrive at the port at least 90 minutes before departure to complete customs and passport control smoothly. A valid passport is required for this cross-border journey into the Schengen Area. Cesme features two distinct departure points: Cesme Pier (Central) serves Erturk Lines and Sun Lines, located in the historic heart of Cesme next to Cesme Castle. It has extensive customs facilities and is accessible from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport via airport shuttle buses or Cesme Seyahat buses from Izmir's Uckuyular district. Cesme Ulusoy Port, approximately 3 km north of the central pier, is exclusively used by IDO Sun Express. This modern international passenger terminal offers ample parking and duty-free shops. Travelers with IDO tickets must proceed directly to Ulusoy Port. Upon arrival at Chios Port, located in the heart of Chios Town, passengers proceed through Greek customs and passport control, which can take up to an hour during peak times. Rental car offices, taxi stands, and KTEL local bus stops are readily available just outside the port.
