Ceuta to Algeciras Ferry

The Ceuta to Algeciras ferry is the return leg of the Strait of Gibraltar's busiest passenger crossing, carrying travellers from the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta on the North African coast back to the port of Algeciras on mainland Spain. Since Ceuta is Spanish territory, this is a domestic route within Spain, which helps explain why sailings are so frequent and so quick.

Operators and vessels

The same three companies work the northbound direction: Baleària, FRS and Naviera Armas / Trasmediterránea. They all deploy fast high-speed craft rather than slower conventional ferries. Baleària runs the speediest crossings, with times advertised from around 56 minutes, while most sailings take about one hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from port to port.

Frequency and timetable

Together the operators provide up to roughly ten daily departures from Ceuta, spread across the day. Baleària offers up to seven sailings, with FRS and Naviera Armas each running up to five. Departures begin in the early morning and continue into the late evening, so it is easy to connect onward to Algeciras, Cádiz or the Costa del Sol after arriving.

Vehicles and passengers

The ferries take both foot passengers and vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and vans, so drivers returning from Ceuta or from a Morocco road trip are well served. Foot-passenger fares generally start from around €25 to €28.

Passport and border notes

No passport is needed for the ferry itself because both Ceuta and Algeciras are Spanish and inside the EU. Travellers who have entered Ceuta overland from Morocco should note that the Moroccan exit formalities happen at the El Tarajal (Bab Sebta) land border before reaching the port, not on the boat. Once at Ceuta's port, boarding for Algeciras is a straightforward domestic process.
