Cádiz to Las Palmas Ferry

This is the classic long-distance Atlantic crossing that links mainland Spain to the Canary Islands, sailing from Cádiz in Andalusia to Puerto de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is a true blue-water voyage rather than an island hop, operated by Naviera Armas together with the Trasmediterránea brand within the Armas Trasmediterránea group. Long the only scheduled passenger-and-vehicle sea link between the peninsula and the archipelago, it is the way people move cars, motorhomes and household loads to the islands without flying.

Set aside serious time: the crossing runs roughly 39 to 40 hours, and depending on the vessel and conditions can range from about 35 up to 43 hours — essentially a day and a half to nearly two days at sea. Two ships handle the route, the Ciudad de Valencia and the Volcán de Tinamar, carrying from around 605 up to 1,500 passengers and as many as 300 vehicles apiece.

Sailings are limited and fixed, generally two departures per week from Cádiz (typically Tuesday and Saturday), so trips need planning well ahead — this is not a turn-up-and-go service. Because of the duration, a cabin is effectively a necessity for most travellers rather than a luxury; the ships offer double and four-berth cabins with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, PRM cabins, suites, armchair lounges, restaurant and cafeteria dining, and pet facilities.

The route also serves onward Canary destinations from Gran Canaria, but the Cádiz leg itself is the heavy-lift Atlantic segment. For anyone relocating to the islands, shipping a vehicle, or simply preferring the sea to a flight, it remains the established maritime gateway between peninsular Spain and the Canaries. Book early, particularly for cabins and vehicle space around summer and holiday periods.
