About Vis
Between 1950 and 1989 no foreigner set foot on this island. Vis was a closed Yugoslav military base, and ninety square kilometres of it held more than thirty installations including an underground hospital and a submarine pen. The reason it is the least developed of the major Dalmatian islands is that for forty years it was not open to develop.
Getting there
Split to Vis takes about 70 minutes on the catamaran, with 4 sailings in our timetable on Jadrolinija and Krilo. It is the furthest of the central Dalmatian islands from the mainland.
Boats land at Vis Town on the northeast coast. Komiža, the fishing village on the far side, is 11 km away.
⚠ Two harbours, one road
Vis Town and Komiža are the island's two settlements and they sit on opposite coasts. Scheduled boats use Vis Town; Komiža is reached over the hill.
Book accommodation and ferry together. Eleven kilometres is not far, but it is a hill road on an island where taxis are few and the bus follows the ferry rather than your plans.
What forty years of closure left
Military tunnels, gun positions and the submarine shelter are still there and several are open to visitors. So is an island with very little modern building on it, a wine tradition that predates all of the above, and a coast that was never lined with hotels because nobody was allowed to build them.
The Blue Cave on neighbouring Biševo is the day-trip draw, reached by small boat from Komiža.
Season and connections
The catamaran network here is seasonal and thins sharply outside summer. Vis is at the end of the line rather than on the way to anywhere, so a missed boat means a night rather than a wait.
