Ferries from Sølsnes ferjekai

Fifteen minutes, twenty-five to thirty departures a day, and almost nobody on board is on holiday. The crossing from Sølsnes is a commuter shuttle that happens to be a county road: it carries people to work in Molde, freight to the Romsdal valley, and tourists only incidentally.

The crossing

Sølsnes to Åfarnes takes about 15 minutes across the Langfjord. Our timetable holds 56 sailings in this direction and 53 the other way; the published pattern runs to roughly 25 to 30 departures a day each way.

Sølsnes is on the Molde side, in Molde municipality; Åfarnes is in Rauma across the water. The route is part of Fylkesvei 64 and is worked by Fjord1.

What high frequency actually buys you

At this interval the ferry stops being an event. You do not consult a timetable, you drive to the quay and the next boat is a short wait away — which is the whole reason a crossing like this can carry commuter traffic at all.

The corollary is that the shoulders of the day are thinner than the middle. Early morning and late evening the gaps stretch, and a fifteen-minute crossing can still cost you an hour if you arrive at the wrong moment.

⚠ Do not confuse it with the fjord ferries further south

Møre og Romsdal has several crossings that tourists plan trips around — the Geiranger boats, the Linge and Eidsdal quays on the scenic route to Trollstigen. This is not one of them.

Sølsnes is infrastructure. There is no viewpoint at the quay, no queue of motorhomes in July, and no reason to be here unless the road you are driving goes through it.

Paying and boarding

No reservations. Board in arrival order, and the crossing bills automatically through AutoPASS plate recognition — there is no booth and no ticket to buy. Foot passengers and cyclists travel free.
