About
About Åfarnes ferjekai
Åfarnes is the Rauma side of the Langfjord crossing, and Rauma is where the good roads are. Turn inland from this quay and within an hour you are in Åndalsnes at the mouth of the Romsdalen valley, under the Troll Wall, at the foot of the Romsdalseggen ridge and at the northern end of the Trollstigen road. The ferry is the short way in from Molde.
The crossing
Åfarnes to Sølsnes takes about 15 minutes, with 53 sailings in this direction and 56 coming back in our timetable — a published pattern of roughly 25 to 30 departures a day each way. The route is part of Fylkesvei 64, worked by Fjord1.
Åfarnes is in Rauma municipality; Sølsnes is on the Molde side.
What the Rauma side opens up
- Åndalsnes — the railway terminus, the Rauma Line's fjord end, and the base for the valley.
- Trollstigen — the eleven-hairpin climb, reached from Åndalsnes and closed by snow for much of the year.
- Romsdalseggen — the ridge walk above the valley, one of the most used day hikes in Norway.
- The Troll Wall, Europe's tallest vertical rock face, visible from the road.
None of that is at the ferry quay. Åfarnes is the door, not the room, and the drive on from it is short.
⚠ The crossing has an expiry date
A ferry-free connection across the Langfjord — the Langfjordforbindelsen, previously known as the Langfjord tunnel — is planned to replace this service. When it opens, the journey between Åndalsnes and Molde will shorten by about 25 minutes and the ferry stops.
No date is fixed here in the way it is for the larger E39 projects, so treat it as coming rather than imminent. What it removes is a fifteen-minute pause; what it adds is a valley an hour closer to an airport.
Using it
There is no booking. Vehicles board in arrival order, AutoPASS reads the plate and bills the account, and walk-on passengers cross free. At twenty-five to thirty departures a day the worst case is a short wait, except at the very start and end of the day.
If you are driving to Trollstigen, check the road's status separately — it is closed by snow well into spring, and the ferry running says nothing about whether the pass is open.
