About

About Helgoland

Helgoland sits 50 km out in the German Bight, the only German island in the open North Sea, and its isolation shapes everything about getting there. Cassen Eils sails from Cuxhaven year-round — the sole winter link — and other operators add summer services from Büsum, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven.

Getting there

Two and a half hours on the conventional ship, about an hour by catamaran. Day trip fares start at €66.00, with multi-day tickets valid for two months. Because the crossing is long and the last boat leaves in the afternoon, a missed sailing means an overnight stay.

On the island

Helgoland is car-free, and famously bicycle-free for visitors too — the island is small enough to walk end to end. Its duty-free status made it the destination of the Butterfahrten, the tax-free excursions that shaped North Sea shipping until 1999.
