About

About Fort Pickens

This service runs on Saturdays only. Three departures leave Fort Pickens for downtown Pensacola at 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00, and three arrive from Pensacola Beach at Quietwater — 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00 — which is the entire published week: six sailings, one day.

The two legs are also different lengths: 6 nautical miles and 45 minutes to the downtown pier, 7.6 nautical miles and an hour from Quietwater, which is closer as the gull flies but sits further along the barrier island's inner shore.

Gulf Islands National Seashore operates the boats itself rather than licensing them out, and the destination is the reason: Fort Pickens is a masonry coastal fort finished in 1834 on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, held by Union troops throughout the Civil War and later used to imprison Geronimo. The road out along the island is long and often washed over — arriving by water is the more reliable way in.
