About Gulf Islands National Seashore
Gulf Islands National Seashore is a US National Park Service unit protecting some of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the Gulf of Mexico, spanning the coasts of Florida and Mississippi in the United States. Several of its islands are reachable only by boat, on seasonal ferries run by park-authorized concessioners.
Ferries to the barrier islands
On the Mississippi side, a concessioner ferry crosses roughly eleven miles from Gulfport to West Ship Island — a one-hour trip often shadowed by dolphins — landing beside the Civil-War-era brick Fort Massachusetts. On the Florida side, a seasonal ferry has linked downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach with Fort Pickens across Pensacola Bay.
