Ferries from Fiskebøl ferjekai

Twenty-five minutes of water here replaces two hundred kilometres of road. The Fiskebøl to Melbu crossing links Lofoten to Vesterålen directly with 11 sailings; without it, traffic goes the long way round via Sortland and Lødingen.

The crossing

Fiskebøl to Melbu covers 8.1 km across the Hadselfjord in about 25 minutes, with 11 sailings in our timetable and 22 across the quay in both directions. It is part of Fylkesvei 82 in Hadsel municipality, Nordland, operated by Nordland fylkeskommune.

Fiskebøl is on Austvågøya, the northernmost of the main Lofoten islands; Melbu is on Hadseløya in Vesterålen.

⚠ Eleven sailings against a 200 km alternative

If a sailing is full or cancelled, the detour is not a diversion — it is a different day. The road route runs east along Lofoten, across to the mainland at Lødingen or round through Sortland, and back out into Vesterålen.

That asymmetry between a twenty-five-minute boat and a four-hour drive is why this crossing matters far more than its sailing count suggests — and why eleven is a thinner margin than it looks.

Where it sits in a Lofoten trip

Most visitors arrive in Lofoten from Bodø at Moskenes in the southwest and drive northeast along the E10. Fiskebøl is near the far end of that drive, and this ferry is how the journey continues into Vesterålen without doubling back.

Used that way, the archipelago becomes a through-route rather than an out-and-back.

Practicalities

No reservations. Vehicles board in arrival order, AutoPASS bills the plate, and foot passengers cross free. The vessel is small enough that a busy summer afternoon can exceed a sailing.

There is nothing at the quay beyond the slipway. Fuel and food are in the villages either side, not at the ramp.
