Ferries from Melbu ferjekai

Melbu is the Vesterålen end of the shortcut into Lofoten — 11 sailings across the Hadselfjord — and it is a proper town rather than a slipway, with a harbour, an industrial past and a ferry carrying a disproportionate share of the region's traffic.

The crossing

Melbu to Fiskebøl covers 8.1 km in about 25 minutes, with 11 sailings in our timetable and 22 across the quay in both directions, on Fylkesvei 82. Operated by Nordland fylkeskommune.

Melbu sits on Hadseløya; Fiskebøl is on Austvågøya in Lofoten. The alternative by road is roughly 200 km.

⚠ The service level is contested locally

Proposals to reduce sailings on this route have drawn objections from across the region, on the grounds that a thinner timetable would create problems well beyond the two quays it connects.

At 11 departures the margin is already narrow. Check the current timetable rather than an older figure, particularly outside summer.

What is on this side

Melbu is a working town with a harbour, a museum quarter in the old herring-industry buildings, and a summer festival that fills it. Stokmarknes, where the Hurtigruten coastal line began in 1893, is a short drive north on the same island.

That gives Melbu something most ferry quays lack: a reason to arrive early rather than exactly on time.

Where the road goes

North from here Fv82 runs up Hadseløya and on into Vesterålen proper — Sortland, Stokmarknes and eventually Andenes at the far tip. South across the water it becomes the E10 through Lofoten.

Practicalities

No booking, arrival order, AutoPASS plate billing, free for foot passengers. The boat is not large, and in July the queue on either side can exceed a sailing.
