About Emden
Emden sits at the mouth of the Ems on the German side of the estuary, and its outer harbour has been a ferry port since the 1840s — the company that sails from here, AG Ems, was founded in 1843 and made its first excursion to Borkum in 1846.
What leaves from here
Car ferries to Borkum, about two hours, and the high-speed catamaran Nordlicht at 60 minutes. Excursion boats also work the outer harbour, and on selected dates run up the river to the fishing village of Ditzum.
Getting here
Emden Außenhafen station is beside the terminal, with Emden Hbf in the town. Between 18 July and 7 August 2026 both are closed to trains for bridge works — services terminate at Leer with replacement buses — and the 14.00 ferry has been moved to 14.15 to suit. Check live rail information before travelling in that window.
