About Borkum
Borkum is the westernmost of the East Frisian Islands, close enough to the Dutch border that its ferries come from two countries. AG Ems sails here from Emden in Germany and from Eemshaven in the Netherlands — the Dutch route consistently the cheaper.
Arriving
The ferry pier is some distance from the town, and the connection is the Borkumer Kleinbahn, the island's narrow-gauge railway, which meets the boats. Car ferries take about two hours from Emden; the catamaran does 60 minutes but has no vehicle deck and cannot carry bulky luggage.
Practical
Day tickets from €27.70 (Eemshaven) or €30.40 (Emden); a weekend return from Friday afternoon is cheaper than the standard return. Holders of a German severe-disability card travel free on the Emden ferry and on the island railway alike. A baggage service delivers luggage from the mainland terminal to island accommodation.
