Ferries from Dubrovnik

Most ports in this guide want more ships. Gruž turns them away. The port authority has refused roughly forty cruise call requests in a single season, and it does so on purpose: Dubrovnik decided some years ago that the constraint on this city is arrivals, not capacity, and the port is where that decision gets enforced.

The quota, in numbers

• Two cruise ships a day under the "Respect the City" arrangement agreed with the cruise industry body CLIA.
• A daily ceiling on cruise passengers — the port authority's own position is 8,000 a day in most cases, though published figures vary between sources and the practical limit is applied case by case.
• 461 calls scheduled for 2026, with about 661,094 cruise passengers expected.
• Three berths, able to take more than one very large ship at once.

It is a rare thing to find written down. Compare Santorini, which regulates where cruise passengers land rather than how many arrive — two islands with the same problem and opposite instruments.

⚠ Why a ferry passenger should care

Because the quota decides how crowded your day is, and it is knowable in advance. Two ships on a Tuesday and none on a Wednesday is a completely different Old Town, and the cruise schedule is published while the ferry timetable makes no mention of it.

If your plan involves the walls or the cable car rather than just the boat, check which days have calls before you fix your ferry date. This is the single most useful piece of Dubrovnik planning and it lives on a port authority page nobody reads.

The port is not where you think it is

Everything — ferries, catamarans and cruise ships alike — uses Gruž, a working harbour a few kilometres northwest of the walled city. The Old Harbour beneath the walls takes small boats and excursions only.

What sails from Gruž

Our timetable holds six routes and fourteen sailings from Dubrovnik — a small number for a port this famous, and an accurate reflection of the place. Gruž is a terminus rather than a hub: the Dalmatian island network thins as it comes south, and most of what leaves here is either a coastal catamaran or a link to the nearer islands.

Season

The cruise season and the ferry season peak together, which is the whole difficulty. April to October is when the coastal catamarans run and when the calls are scheduled; the quota holds the ceiling but the ceiling is high.

Late September and October are the best compromise available here: warm water, the boats still running, and a cruise calendar that has started to thin.
