Ferries from Brønnøysund hurtigbåtkai

There is a hole straight through the mountain outside this town. Torghatten's natural tunnel is 160 metres long, 35 metres high and 20 metres wide, cut by the sea during the ice ages, and you can walk through it.

Ninety-five minutes up the coast to Sandnessjøen looks like a useful alternative to driving. With a single departure in our timetable it is not a service you can plan around without checking the current schedule and the day of the week.

Torghatten

The walk up to the hole takes about twenty minutes from the car park and the path is steep but made. Standing inside it, looking out at the sea through a mountain, is the reason the coastal ships slow down as they pass.

Norse legend explains it as an arrow shot through a hat. Geology explains it as ice-age wave action on a weakness in the rock. Both are told locally.

The town

Brønnøysund is a small coastal town that happens to hold Norway's central business registers, which gives it a white-collar workforce and an airport out of proportion to its size. For a visitor it is the base for Torghatten and the gateway to the Vega archipelago.

Year round on the local boats. Winter cancels the longer, more exposed sailings first.
