Ferries from Sandnessjøen ferjekai

The Seven Sisters stand directly behind this quay — seven peaks in a row along Alsten island, the most recognisable skyline on the Helgeland coast. The ferry across to Dønna runs beneath them, twenty-eight sailings a day's worth, as ordinary local transport.

The crossings

• Bjørn on Dønna — about 25 minutes, 28 sailings. The main link, dense enough to use without planning.
• Løkta — about 45 minutes, 3 sailings.

62 active sailings across the port, operated by Nordland fylkeskommune. Sandnessjøen is also a call on the Hurtigruten and Havila coastal route.

De syv søstre

The seven summits run along the eastern side of Alstenøya, rising directly from sea level to well over a thousand metres. Walking all seven in a day is an established local challenge and a substantial one — this is a mountain range, not a hill walk, and the ferry timetable is not built around it.

⚠ The town is a base, not a destination in itself

Sandnessjøen is the service centre for the Helgeland islands: supermarkets, a hospital, an airport, and the road connections that the islands lack. Most visitors pass through it on the way to Dønna, Herøy or Vega.

Plan it as a hub. Arriving late and expecting evening onward connections to the islands does not work — the small-island sailings finish early.

The Helgeland Bridge

The road south crosses the Helgeland Bridge, a long cable-stayed span that replaced a ferry and is one of the landmarks of the coastal route. Its existence is a reminder of what happens to crossings like these over time — several Helgeland ferries have already been superseded by fixed links.

Practicalities

No reservations on the county ferries, arrival order, AutoPASS billing by plate, foot passengers free. The Dønna crossing is frequent enough that a full sailing costs you half an hour rather than a day.
