Ferries from Bjørn ferjekai Dønna

Dønna is a large island with two ferry links and no bridge, and Bjørn is its main quay. 28 sailings run the twenty-five minutes to Sandnessjøen, which is frequent enough that islanders treat the crossing as a road rather than a journey.

⚠ Frequency is not the same as capacity

Twenty-eight sailings sounds generous until a July afternoon, when the boats are small and the queue at Bjørn is holiday traffic rather than commuters. Missing one costs half an hour; missing three costs an afternoon.

Travel outside the middle of the day in summer if the schedule matters.

Dønna

The island is farmed as well as fished — unusually green for this latitude, with a medieval stone church at Dønnes and a manor house behind it. The interior rises to the Dønnesfjellet, from which the Seven Sisters across the water are laid out in a row.

That view, back at Sandnessjøen's mountains, is the reason to make the crossing as anything other than transport.

Løkta

The smaller island east of Dønna gets ten sailings and has a population in the low hundreds. It is the kind of place the Norwegian ferry system exists to keep viable.

Practicalities

No booking, arrival order, AutoPASS by plate, foot passengers free. Bicycles cross free and Dønna's roads are quiet enough to make that worthwhile.
